Try Morning Pages from Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way. Spiral notebook with pilot pen. Write 3 pages every morning first thing. Been doing it for years.
I do something similar. Writing is the first thing I do in mornings for some years and it helped me a lot with my Substack newsletter. One of the best advice.
Lissa brought me here. I've been feeling the urge to go more analogue recently and appreciate this. I think carrying a notebook and noticing things that I normally pass by will be a lovely adventure.
I'm glad you liked this idea. It's scientifically proven that writing by hand and not being in front of a screen improves concentration and learning. We remember better and are less distracted because we're not in that black hole of endless distraction.
Having a physical space like this is increasingly necessary; it's a refuge from the digital world.
Yes indeed. Recently I acquired an allotment and started growing my own food and it's so good to reconnect with nature and the community. Best thing I ever did and I have a notebook for the allotment where I record thoughts, observations, plans and lessons learned! But now I will add to it something new I notice every day.
Holy cow that Didion quote really stings. At present I am doing two different approaches to this type of insightful documentation. I started keeping a commonplace book earlier this year, a physical pen and paper notebook. And I resumed journaling several months ago, but am doing that digitally, as words just really tend to flow out of my fingers through the keyboard for me. I do include highlights and sketches and pasting random items in the commonplace book, so it is definitely more visually interesting than my journals! At present I do not carry the commonplace book with me, so I will start doing that. IDK if I am ready to combine the two quite yet. There's something in me from my elementary school diary days that is hesitant to commit personal revelations to pen and paper where anyone can read it. But I love this post and will be sharing it.
