I wonder if she ever ran into compromising circumstances during her travels. Being a European and female in the early 1900s, it seemed to be safer for women, especially older women, to travel to exotic places. My aunt Isabelle and a pair of my husband's aunts traveled widely throughout the world. I and other young women, especially Americans, had more safety issues. Apparently, American women are considered whores and fair game. The harassment is constant. Even traveling with buddies, one isn't really safe. My roommate in Israel traveled across northern Africa before arriving at the kibbutz. She was a mental wreck. I had my own problems too. It's like the hands come out of the walls. I'd love to have the kind of immersive journey the you write of here, but maybe it's necessary to be older. Elderly women, apparently, can get away with just about anything that younger women can't even dare.

Hi Sue!

Alexandra tells in the book that it was not easy, in fact, she pretended to be a beggar, wearing dirty and low quality clothes to go unnoticed, she always carried a knife under her clothes and she even carried guns when crossing borders.

Of course, she had to go through some nervous moments, but fortunately, everything went well.

Security is increasing in many places, but it is still dangerous to go alone as a woman in some countries.

From what I hear from American nomads who live in camper vans, etc., it's dangerous here too. I had a weird experience at a lake near my home that gave me the willies.

It could have been, but I think I had a guardian angel. I was loading my dog into the car after a walk when this guy drove up and got out of his car. As he came toward me, another car slid in right in front of me, boxing me in. This guy just leaned out his window and said, "Isn't this a pretty place? I love it here." The first guy sped off without a word. I got in my car and drove off, thinking I'd barely missed a potentially awful situation. That second guy was my angel. The news is full of this kind of thing and the police have cautioned women not to hang out in their cars in parking lots without locking their doors. You would think in a civilized society .... but ......
