In some ways this sounds all very much like Socrates, who, if memory serves argued that an unexamined life is not worth living.

Exactly! Socrates was a staunch advocate of the idea of living with hindsight. One of the wisest ways to learn is to see what you did in the past. Learn from the past in order to live towards the future.

I hadn't thought of that and you're absolutely right, they have a lot in common :)
